WOMEN's DAY 2018

Saving this here. It was a message to rhe Ladies in 2018

Dear Family

As we gear up to celebrate the United Nations' Day for Women Rights and International Peace tomorrow, may we be reminded, not only of the immense achievements that have been made by women for humanity, but also about the continued discrimination, ill treatment, inequality and mistreatment that continues to beguile many of the women of this nation and the world

As the world continues to correct the wrongs of the past through interventions such as the passing of International instruments like the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the Convention on the Political Rights of Women, among others, we also recognise local interventions like litigation and prosecution and also campaigns like the "Me Too" Movement or the "Grid Girls" decision by Formula 1 which are targeted at creating a better world for our mothers, sisters, wives and daughters

It is true that many men have benefitted, either directly or indirectly, from women's disadvantaged position. However, may this reality should embolden us to work closely and in concert with women, to correct these historical and contemporary wrongs. Of special note is the case of our mothers, wives and sisters in the rural areas who suffer untold stories of gender based sexual / domestic violence including, but not limited to, missing out on health, education, accomodation, food and other basic needs.

We therefore need to heed the call to do something for our mothers, wives, daughters and sisters over and above merely buying dinner with roses or occassionally washing dishes on Women's Day. May we be seen to speak out for their rights, to give generously to their causes, to take up our responsibilities as fathers, brothers, sons, husbands and fellow human beings. May we be consistent too and ready to be counted on as and when need arises. May we use our professions and our diverse positions to ensure that one day, it will nolonger be said that discrimination and violence against women exists in our world.

For our mothers, wives,  sisters, daughters and friends, may you find it in your hearts to forgive us for where we have been selfish and heartless. May you help us see and understand what it means to love. May you help us to see that the world is big enough for all of us.

Amen
